Planning Your Kitchen Renovation

The kitchen is the heart of the home! It’s a place to cook, create, gather, and entertain. Whether you’re building your dream kitchen, or remodelling your current layout to create more space, planning is key in designing a kitchen that will complement your lifestyle. There are several important elements to consider when planning your kitchen renovation, including the layout, materials, colour schemes, storage, and appliances.

Aussie Cut has developed a comprehensive guide that will assist with the planning process so you can create a kitchen that’s both practical, and stunning.

Layout

There is an abundance of kitchen layout ideas, however it’s important to find the perfect layout to suit your home and kitchen needs! Depending on the size of your home and your existing layout, there are several shape options to choose from.

U-Shaped Kitchen

U-shaped kitchens are great for fast-paced kitchens and busy cooks!

Everything is easily accessible, and the fridge is often placed outside the U to optimise counter space.

L-Shaped Kitchen

This kitchen layout design is a popular option for modern day kitchens.

It features a central island and is ideal for multipurpose kitchens. The L-shaped design can be personalised to fit almost any style home; however, it works best with plenty of space.

Galley Kitchen

Galley kitchens are simple, effective, and can be modernised to become a stylish addition to any home. The single-line layout puts everything within close distance to create a functional space.

Once you’ve established which shape will work for you, it’s time to test the practicality of the kitchen design with the “triangle” rule. The kitchen triangle is a useful tool that comes in handy when arranging your appliances. More elaborate kitchens, featuring a greater number of contemporary appliances, can work with a kitchen “polygon”. Things to consider include what you use the galley kitchen for, and what appliances you will use the most. By doing so, you can ensure you create the ideal route between your work centres.

Choosing the perfect layout will ensure your time spent in the kitchen is enjoyable and efficient!

Materials

The materials used for cabinets and benchtops are vital in the longevity and appearance of your kitchen.

Available Materials

The materials used for cabinets and benchtops are vital in the longevity and appearance of your kitchen.

We supply only laminate benchtops and are not a supplier of stone. At Aussie Cut, your choices for your custom made cabinetry includes 2 pack and laminate using Australian made HMR or MR MDF board in a wide range of brands and colours.

Hardware

Your kitchen cabinet plans need to include ideas about decorative and functional hardware. Selecting hardware that offers a balance of style and functionality is important in achieving the perfect finishing touches for your kitchen.

We source all of our drawers, runners and hinges from internationally renowned supplier Blum Hardware, so the quality of our flat pack kitchens is guaranteed. You have the option to select drawer runners that are; regular, semi-soft close or completely soft close all at different price points. Ask your Aussie Cut Sales Manager about the differences to decide the best option for your budget and renovation.

Kitchen Styles

Personalise your kitchen with colours and textures that suit the style you’re looking to achieve. Options include traditional, contemporary, or casual designs.

Traditional Style

A traditional style kitchen draws inspiration from classic European architecture and design. It reflects symmetry, decorative trim and patterns, highly polished surfaces, and traditional/antique finishes. Traditional colours and textures create a calm, welcoming feeling.

Contemporary

Contemporary kitchens are built on the rule that less is more. Sleek, sophisticated colour is used instead of patterns, and textures are smooth and simple. Touches of bold colour can be used against soft colours to create a unique, contemporary statement in your modern kitchen. The simplicity and lack of ornamentation makes a contemporary kitchen functional, and stylish.

Casual

Casual style kitchens are composed of natural elements and uncomplicated features. They offer a welcoming and relaxing family atmosphere. The natural soft pastels or warm tones create tranquillity, and the earthy features are ideal for a casual setting.

There is also the option of defining your kitchen’s style with warm or cool colour palettes.  The location of your home, the size, and the atmosphere you’re looking to create will all contribute to your choice. Warm colours create a sunny feeling in the kitchen. Reds, yellows, and oranges can be combined with woods and metals such as brass, bronze, and copper to create a natural and homely kitchen. Cool colours including blues and greens are great for creating a calming environment that resonates with the sky and water. When it comes to choosing surfaces, consider which textures appeal to you. You can create different effects by incorporating smooth or rough surfaces, polished or naturally honed, and solid colours or patterns.

Storage

Storage is the component that can make or break your kitchen. Storing all of your kitchen appliances and supplies while keeping them easily accessible, can be quite difficult.

Install cabinets that effectively utilise the space you have. Height is useful, and extending pantries and cabinets to the ceiling is a great way to increase storage space. Integrating rubbish and recycling bins into storage cabinets is key in constructing a functional and tidy kitchen.

Installing cabinets above the refrigerator and across the backs of lower kitchen cabinets is a great way to use space, and is often overlooked in kitchen designs. Be sure to establish what kitchen appliances and supplies you currently use, and what you’d like to incorporate in your new kitchen to ensure you plan for adequate storage space.

Incorporating Existing Appliances

Working with your existing appliances can be a great way to keep renovation costs down. Decide whether your appliances are out of date, energy efficient, or if they’ll decrease the value of your home.

If you plan on installing new appliances, ensure you record the correct measurements and that there’s enough space to accommodate new appliances in the renovated kitchen. Prepare to sell or recycle your old appliances if they no longer serve their purpose in your kitchen.

The planning process of your kitchen renovation can be exciting if all the phases are properly addressed! Be sure to consider the simple aspects, as they can make dramatic differences in the function and appearance of your kitchen. If you have questions on the planning phase of your new kitchen, contact the team of expert staff at Aussie Cut!
