How to Check Measure Your Kitchen

Thursday, 20 May 2021 by Jordan

When it comes to planning a kitchen renovation, measuring your space is one of the first tasks to cross off the list. Measurements of your kitchen are essential in order to obtain an accurate quote and begin the renovation process. It goes without saying that the check measure process is incredibly important for ensuring your custom made kitchen is cut to the right size. We know how daunting the task can seem which is why we have put together this guide to help you through the process.

To get started, all you need is a tape measure and a pen with paper to record the measurements you take. It can also help to have a leveler on hand to check where there may be inconsistencies that need to be taken into consideration within your kitchen layout.

While it may seem overwhelming at first to get the measurements right, it really is quite a simple process. It also means that you can organize your new kitchen entirely over email and call with the Aussie Cut team.

In this article we are going to be guiding you through the process of check measuring your kitchen so that you can provide measurements to your cabinet maker. Your programmer will ask that you provide a minimum plan view of your required kitchen layout with rough measurements like the example above. Elevations can be used to show vertical dimensions and your preferred layout, as shown below.

All we really require are the basic dimensions of the space you are working within. Don’t let these examples intimidate you. Basic dimensions of overall width, height and depth are enough for us to work with initially to get a quote started. Otherwise, you can use graph paper to sketch an outline of your overall space and rough cabinetry layout like the above.

Height – In here, the height of your kitchen would be the space in between the floor and ceiling.

Width – Likewise, the width of your kitchen is measured by calculating the distance from one wall to another.

Measuring the overall size of your kitchen

Firstly, you need to measure the overall size of your kitchen. In here, the height of your kitchen would be the space in between floor and ceiling of the kitchen. Likewise, the width of your kitchen is measured by calculating the distance from one wall to another. At the time of taking measurements, you will need include the height from floor to windows.

This way we can ensure that all the benchtops and cabinets fit perfectly. You should also take note of the power points and light switches that you have in the kitchen as well. Also useful to know are the electricity and plumbing points in the chicken. All the other permanent fixtures that you have at the kitchen such as pillars and balustrades must be taken into consideration as well.

With these measurements, you will be able to receive a clear understanding about the overall dimensions of the kitchen. Along with that, you can make appropriate adjustments to the kitchen accordingly.

Measuring the size of kitchen cabinets to create a new layout.

Next up is taking the measurements of kitchen cabinets that you have. If you are creating a brand new layout, you can simple provide drawings of how you would like your cabinets placed and your programmer can work out the new dimensions.

In order to take the measurements of kitchen cabinets, you should first create a general sketch of your kitchen. You just need to take a blank sheet of paper or grid paper and roughly outline the layout of your kitchen cabinets from an elevated view. You should clearly mark the existing appliances and windows that you have in the kitchen as well.

Mark the height of the kitchen cabinets. This will be the distance that you have from the floor to the base of the kitchen cabinet. You must also take width of the kitchen cabinets into consideration. Along with that, you should understand the horizontal space that the kitchen cabinet would consume as well.

Take measurements of all the objects that are connected to the wall

Include all of your appliances such as your oven, sink, windows and other large scale accessories attached into the walls of the kitchen. You can take a tape and obtain the measurements. You should not just take the length and the width, but you should also take depth into consideration.

Most importantly, you need to take measurements of all the outlets, jacks, lines and other fixtures that you have in the kitchen. They include power outlets, drains, water lines, phone jacks, ventilation shafts, light fixtures, light switches and range outlets.

Taking measurements of the existing cabinets

Measurements are especially important if your renovation is just resurfacing your existing cabinets rather than creating a new layout. If you already have cabinets installed in the kitchen, you need to begin by finding the total depth, height and width of each cabinet that you have. Cabinets are one of the most important aspects within a kitchen design. Therefore, you need to take the time to accurately note the size of kitchen cabinets, especially if you plan on keeping the existing layout.

You can get the help of a measuring tape to take these measurements. While taking the measurements, you need to include countertops, toe kicks, frameless doors and the other appendages that you have as well.

Upon taking measurements of the width, you need to proceed to the next stage, where you are taking interior measurements of the cabinet. The interior of kitchen cabinets can be quite similar to the exterior in most of the instances. However, it is better to double check and confirm everything before you proceed. Then you will be able to alter the interiors of the cabinet accordingly with things such as mirrors and shelves.

Your new Aussie Cut kitchen is entirely up to you and you will love the flexibility in design that such a custom-made kitchen can offer you. Following these steps will help you to properly measure and sketch your new kitchen design in a comprehensive manner to proceed with quoting and programming your kitchen renovation.
