Measuring the overall size of your kitchen
Firstly, you need to measure the overall size of your kitchen, taking note of its height and width.
Height – In here, the height of your kitchen would be the space in between the floor and ceiling.
Width – Likewise, the width of your kitchen is measured by calculating the distance from one wall to another.
At the time of taking measurements, you will need to note the height from floor to windows. This way you can ensure that all the benchtops and cabinets fit perfectly within your space. Along with that, you should take down notes of the power points and light switches that you have in the kitchen. Take into consideration the location of service points that you have in the kitchen, such as electricity and plumbing. With these measurements, you will be able to gain a clear understanding of the overall dimensions of your space.
Measuring the size of kitchen cabinets
If you already have cabinets installed in the kitchen, you need to begin by finding the total depth and height of each cabinet that you have. Cabinets are one of the most important aspects within a kitchen design. Therefore, you need to take the time to accurately note the size of kitchen cabinets, especially if you plan on keeping the existing layout.
General sketch – In order to take the measurements of kitchen cabinets, you should first create a general sketch of your kitchen. You just need to take a blank sheet of paper and record a rough outline of your kitchen layout. You should clearly mark the existing appliances and windows that you have in the kitchen as well.
To begin taking these measurements, first note the height of the kitchen cabinets. This will be the distance that you have from the floor to the base of the kitchen cabinet. Next is to take note of the width of the kitchen cabinets. Ensure you also include a measurement of the ‘kicks’ located between the floor and the start of the cabinet.
While taking the measurements with your measuring tape, you need to include countertops, toe kicks, frameless doors and the other appendages that you have as well.
Take measurements of appliances
You will also notice that there are many appliances to consider within your kitchen layout. You will need to take measurements of those objects as well. They include your oven, sink, windows and other large scale accessories attached into the walls of the kitchen. You can take a tape and obtain the measurements. You should not just take the length and the width, but you should also take depth into consideration. You need to record these measurements in your blueprint sketch as well.
Taking extra precautions to note all of these details ensures a painless installation process as all potential obstacles have been considered. The biggest benefit to a custom made kitchen is that you control all of the heights, widths and depths of each cabinet and as such as customize a design to best suit your needs.
